Leaders Introduce the Way of Council to their Organizations

The beauty of the circle formation in Council Circle is that it diminishes rigid hierarchies. Every person in the circle holds an equally important space in the formation. Everyone has a voice in the process. The circle is a liminal and transformative shape.

The magic happens as we learn to listen deeply. In this way, the circle becomes a crucible for intimacy. Intimacy is really about moving from fragmentation to integration. Intimacy is the integration of all consciousness. The Council Circle practice allows the mind to clear just enough to be touched by other people's stories, even ones we disagree with.

I'm thrilled to announce that in the next several months I have the opportunity to introduce the Council Circle practice on an organizational level to a number of clients. It's an incredibly challenging time for all of us. And Council Circle is one way leaders have decided to tend to the needs of their people. It is one way to create communities of care.

Council Circle is a communication tool used for groups to practice egalitarian dynamics, skillful expression, and perhaps most importantly-- authentic and embodied listening. The practice can be found in many indigenous cultures throughout the world. The structure I learned stems from the Lakota tradition. I offer it as an act of respect and re-membering.

The Way of Council has become an integral part of conflict resolution and restorative justice processes and important change work within organizations.
